Threats came in the mail, saying his wife and children would be killed. Players on other teams and even some of his own teammates stepped on him with their cleats or threw balls at his head.
Things were especially bad whenever the Dodgers played against the Philadelphia Phillies. In one game, some players held up their bats like guns and pretended to shoot at him. Jackie later said he almost cracked under the stress, but he never lost his temper.
Jackie and Pee Wee
Pee Wee Reese was the shortstop for the Dodgers. The other players had a lot of respect for him. Some of Jackie’s teammates sent around a letter that said they didn’t want to play with a black man. Pee Wee refused to sign.
One day when the fans yelled abuse at Jackie, Pee Wee walked across the field, put his hand on Jackie’s shoulder, and talked to him a while. Pee Wee showed everyone that he stood with Jackie.
